Written in a flurry of inspiration in the winter of 2009 after reading Zora Neale Hurston's book 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'. I was so inspired I read everything she's ever published and a few of her biographies. She was an incredible woman who left a beautiful legacy and I am honored to have stumbled across such gold. This song heavily quotes from the last chapter of TEWWG where the main character, Janey, has a moment of clarity and insight into herself and the laws of the universe and realizes that love is a unique miracle each and every time it manifests itself.
lyrics
GRINDSTONE
Zora speaking through Janey, she told me one rainy afternoon.
She said Love, it ain’t no grindstone
that’s gonna work the same
no matter who’s hand pushes ‘round on some old crank.
Nonono love, she’s a living thing
Moves like the sea
Gonna wash you over and crash down on me.
Your love, it ain’t like they love
Nobody ever had none if they don’t make none.
No Love, it ain’t no grindstone
that’s gonna work the same
no matter who’s hand pushes ‘round on some old crank.
Love, she’s a living thing sweet as a breeze
Gonna blow you over and kiss my sweet cheek.
My love it ain’t like they love
You know you need to make some if you wanna have some.
Love, it ain’t no grindstone
that’s gonna work the same
no matter who’s hand pushes ‘round on some old crank.
Love, she’s a living thing
Sweet as a spring!
Go’wan, dip your cup in and have yo’self a drink!
Our love, it aint like they love. Nobody ever had none quite like our own.
